MINISTER VISITS THE UKRAINIAN HUB

H4U has been honoured and Ukrainian Highlanders delighted to have hosted a visit to our Inverness Hub by the Scottish Government Minister for Equalities, Migration and Refugees, Emma Rodick, MSP.

Ms Roddick was welcomed to the Hub by around 50 Ukrainian nationals just before Christmas and was able to spend time getting to know Ukrainian Highlanders and to hear of their experiences in the north of Scotland and about their wishes for the future.

She helped local Ukrainian children enthusiastically make Christmas decorations and had lunch with the group, the highlight of which – both for the Minister and those attending – was undoubtedly the traditional Ukrainian cakes baked specially for her visit by talented pastry chef Tetiana Potapko!

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament on Dec 19, 2023, a few days after the visit, Ms Roddick said: “On Saturday, I was welcomed at the Highlands for Ukraine hub in Inverness by Ukrainians and those who support them. I spoke to people about the support, events and opportunities to gather that have been helpful to them. What came across very clearly was the strength of spirit and determination among the displaced Ukrainians who are making their home in the Highlands, in Inverness and Aviemore, as well as the widespread will of the Highland community to help them. That included individuals becoming hosts, trucks being filled with aid to send to eastern Europe and the local Rotary club organising fun and lively acts of kindness such as sleigh rides and contributing to collections for Ukraine.”

During the debate Ms Roddick also told her parliamentary colleagues: “Scotland has been unwavering in its solidarity with Ukraine, and our message today for Ukrainians in Scotland is clear. We continue to stand with you, we continue to welcome you in our communities and we will continue to support you to build new lives in Scotland. Slava Ukraini.”
